The family tradition at Thousand Acres began over a half-century ago, when the Smith family purchased the property shortly after Deep Creek Lake
was impounded to form Maryland's largest hydroelectric project. The pristine lake and mountainous landscape of Garrett County has long been a

1950's, the Smith family has sold only a limited portion of the Thousand Acres shoreline to individual homeowners and to a small, private yacht club.
