Garrett County offers a full complement of four-season recreation. Winter activities include tubing, downhill skiing or snowboarding at nearby WISP Resort, as well as plenty of local snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating and cross-country skiing. A multitude of summer activities include horseback riding, crafts and antiques shopping, and plenty of hiking, biking, fishing, white-water rafting and camping in nearby state parks and forests. The clean, clear waters of Deep Creek Lake also provide water sports such as sailing, swimming and power boating.
Whitewater Rafting and Fly-Fishing
The Youghiogheny and Cheat Rivers provide world-renowned, Class 3 through 5, whitewater rafting as well as outstanding fly-fishing; all less than an hour’s drive from Thousand Acres.
Yacht Clubs
The private Deerhaven Yacht Club is located on Thousand Acres and holds weekly round-the-buoys sailing races and social activities. The Turkey Neck Yacht Club across the lake also joins in on the racing and social activities. All sailors can join and race in the summer-long events hosted by these clubs. The Yacht Clubs operate a sailing school for juniors every summer.
WISP Resort
The WISP, a four-season resort, is on the north end of Deep Creek Lake and offers outstanding terrain and facilities for winter skiing, boarding, and other winter sports, such as tubing and a downhill coaster. About a 15-minute drive from Thousand
Acres, WISP also houses an Adventure Sports Center, also known as ASCI, providing hours of summer fun with whitewater rafting and boating.
Deep Creek Lake State Park
The state park provides daily boat launching and recovery for all types of boats and includes a sand-filled beachfront and miles of hiking and mountain bike trails. The Park’s Discovery Center offers extensive educational activities on the local forests and wildlife.
